NNOGC is proud to support October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Tse’hootsooi Medical Center (TMC) sponsored a Breast Cancer Awareness walk. Over 280 walkers participated. Special thanks to NNOGC employee, Annabelle Henderson, and to Donna Finto, RN for for participation and sponsorship of this walk. NNOGC provided water and snacks, as well, as 200 t-shirts for the event. “Early detection can save lives!” said Donna Finto. Finto planned the first annual event as the Cancer Care coordinator for TMC. She plans to host the event on an annual basis. NNOGC employee Henderson joined the group as support after losing a family member to cancer. Now, as an active support member she wants to help others who have been impacted by cancer. According to Finto, “The presence of COVID caused people to stay home as they were directed and did not get screening exams such as mammograms. This caused issues to be found later than TMC would like. So the awareness walk was initiated to encourage people to get mammograms again. The prevalence of cancer is higher on the reservation than off-reservation communities.” The event was joined by TMC’s Womens Health Services. Both groups work to promote awareness and encourage women to participate in mammograms and other services to gain early detection
